Arthroscopic SLAP repair is a surgical procedure performed to repair the tear of the biceps tendon at the point where it connects to the labrum.
The SLAP Tear is a painful shoulder condition caused by a tear of the labrum, the ring of cartilage that surrounds the shoulder socket and plays a vital role in the shoulder’s stability. In most SLAP tears, the superior part of the labrum is the area where the injury occurs.
As a painful shoulder injury, SLAP tears are typically caused by a fall onto an outstretched arm, repetitive and intense over the head arm movements, and trauma to the shoulder. A SLAP tear can also occur as a result of wearing down of the labrum that occurs slowly over time.
The treatment options for the SLAP tears depend on the severity of the tear and they can vary. In many patients, the initial treatment for SLAP tear is nonsurgical and it includes non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication or physical therapy. However, in patients where the labrum tear is severe or the nonsurgical methods have proven to be ineffective, surgical treatment is recommended to repair the tear.
