One of our recent patients has a remarkable and inspiring commitment to his work. An NYPD inspector was concerned about stepping away from his duties, so he continued working with unbearable pain in his knee and prolonged the needed medical attention. Along with the intense pain, the patient also experienced severely limited mobility in his knee due to a cartilage injury. As a result, the patient had trouble performing simple and basic knee movements that require knee bending. As an NYPD inspector, the vitality of the knee is crucial for accomplishing his work duties.  As soon as the patient found the time to visit Manhattan Orthopedic Care, he made an appointment with Dr. Armin Tehrany. During the appointment, Dr. Tehrany examined the injured knee thoroughly and diagnosed the patient with a cartilage injury. After explaining the nature of the cartilage injury to the patient, he also elaborated on the available treatment options.  As an experienced knee specialist, Dr. Tehrany felt that conservative treatment would provide the best results.
Due to the cartilage’s nature in the patient’s knee, Dr. Tehrany knew that a total knee replacement would be necessary eventually. However, considering the patient’s age, Dr. Tehrany decided to proceed with an arthroscopic debridement that will give the patient enough time before undergoing major knee surgery.
“It’s basically almost bone on bone, and he’s only 55,” Dr. Tehrany explained.
During the procedure, Dr. Tehrany cleaned up the injured area of any tears and loose bodies to prolong the need for a knee replacement.  Coupled with other solutions like cortisone, stem cell, or PRP injections, Dr. Tehrany was hopeful that the patient would enjoy 5 to 10 years of a pain-free life. According to Dr. Tehrany, the goal of the treatment was to provide relief to the patient.
“A lot of these procedures, they are not curative,” Dr. Tehrany said plainly.
Although his injury will require follow-up treatment, the patient has already experienced significant alleviation of his painful symptoms. The relief should allow him to perform better at work and enjoy his life.  If you are dealing with a knee injury that impacts your life, it’s time to see a knee specialist. It’s essential to make time for your health, so we urge you to schedule your appointment with Dr. Armin Tehrany, one of NY’s top-rated knee surgeons.
