At Manhattan Orthopedic Care, we go above and beyond to keep our patients comfortable and well informed about their condition and treatment. Dr. Armin Tehrany strongly believes that educated and informed patients feel empowered and confident when choosing the treatment course. Moreover, they go through their recovery period with a calm mind and recover smoothly and fast.  Recently, Dr. Armin Tehrany and his team helped a patient who experienced excruciating pain in his shoulder. During the appointment, Dr. Tehrany diagnosed the patient with a SLAP tear in his left shoulder based on the pain, the limited range of motions, and the sensation of catching the patient experienced. However, before recommending the treatment course, Dr. Tehrany decided to inspect the shoulder more thoroughly with an arthroscopic camera.  Once again, Dr. Tehrany turned the surgical procedure into an educational course. With the patient’s consent, Dr. Tehrany recorded the entire procedure to provide a more in-depth understanding of arthroscopic surgeries. In the operating room, Dr. Tehrany worked together with his physician associates Tim Lopresti and Stephen Bouskila. PA Bouskila controlled the shoulder position to maximize the extremity’s exposure. At the same time, Dr. Tehrany did a thorough analysis of the shoulder joint.
The diagnostic part of the procedure confirmed the SLAP tear in the shoulder with a positive peel-back sign. As Dr. Tehrany explained, the peel-back sign refers to the peeling off of the labrum when the arm is in a “throwing” position.
“We want to see when they bring their arm into this position, is that labrum stable and locked or does it peel off?” Dr. Tehrany explained in the video.
After a detailed visualization of the joint, Dr. Tehrany had complete information to recommend the best treatment to proceed with. Based on the diagnosis, the arthroscopic SLAP repair along with a biceps tenodesis would provide the best results. Additionally, a post-procedure protocol of ice, pain management, and activity modification would also mitigate the pain.  Following the procedure, the team escorted the patient to the recovery room and handled his post-op period with superb care.  If you experience shoulder pain that needs the attention of a professional, book your appointment with Dr. Armin Tehrany, one of New York’s top-rated shoulder specialists.
